I came across a really cool toy for kids ages 5-12) and it is call the Ezy Roller. It is like a bike, yet nothing like a bike.
They are low to the ground (they don't tip over) and all of the steering is done with the feet. The brakes are all managed with the hands.
They have become hugely popular.
If you plan on buying one for your child, I highly recommend you get an orange flag to go with it.
